Nara - famous for its rich collection of art, history, architecture, scenery, and beauty - transforms on Sunday November 16 for the first ever DrupalCon Treasure Hunt!

Challenges that blend Drupal knowledge with Japanese culture

Teams of up to three people race across the city. From bowing with sacred deer to solving riddles at ancient temples, this four-hour competition offers a completely new way to connect with the community while exploring one of Japan's most beautiful cities.

This isn't your typical conference activity. Starting at 11am, teams will navigate through UNESCO World Heritage sites, interact with Nara's famous deer, and tackle creative challenges that will have you posting selfies, hunting for hidden landmarks, and testing your Drupal trivia knowledge—all while competing for exciting prizes.

For just AUD $30 per person, you'll experience Nara in a way that no guidebook could ever offer, creating memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.

How It Works

The competition officially starts at 11am Sunday on November 16. At the time, we’ll publish a list of challenge locations and clues, spread all across Nara City. Your team needs to plan a route to take in as many of these locations as possible.

But take heed! Each location and challenge awards a different number of points. Do you stay near the centre of town, where there are more locations but fewer points each? Or do you take a risk and head further out in search of challenges that are harder to find but award many more points? Choose carefully, because your team can’t split up and there’s no guarantees.

We’ve designed this Treasure Hunt so that it’s impossible for any one team to visit every single location and complete every single challenge.

When you win points, an Official will stamp your team’s scorecard. The competition ends at 3pm at a set location (to be announced before the event). Hand in your scorecard before 3pm. If you’re late, you might miss out!

Bring family members or team up with other attendees

Each team can consist of up to 3 people. You can absolutely play as a duo or solo if you want, but no more than 3 people per team. Your team is there to support each other, and cannot separate during the event.

Each team must have at least one member with a valid DrupalCon Nara ticket. That ticket holder can invite up to two family members or friends to join their team, even if they don't have conference tickets themselves.

Although not every team member needs a DrupalCon ticket, every team member must register for the Treasure Hunt as it is a separate event.

You need to come up with a unique name for your team, which you can let us know when each team member registers for the event.

If you want to join a team but don’t know anyone else who is coming, don’t worry! We encourage you to post in the #drupalcon_asia channel in the official Drupal Slack to see if anyone else is looking to join a team.

Registrations close on November 7, 2025, 23:59 JST. Teams must be registered before the event so you cannot join a different team on the day.

Quest Types
Quests have been compiled with help from Nara locals, Nara City, and experienced travellers to help contestants take in the best parts of the city.
Checkpoint quests

These offer the fewest points but are easy to do; All your team has to do is show up. Some check-in locations will have an Official who can stamp your scorecard right away, while others will need you to take photographic or video evidence to prove you were there, which you can show to an Official at another checkpoint later on.

Checkpoints which are further away from the starting location will award more points, and some offer serious bounty.

Challenge quests

These offer different rewards based on the complexity of the challenge. For example, a challenge might require you to get a video of a deer bowing to you in exchange for a delicious cracker. Easy! But another challenge might require you to visit a museum and answer a tricky question about Nara’s history. Yet another challenge might offer a riddle at a certain location, to give you a clue about how to answer.

The more challenging the challenge, the more points are awarded!

Trivia quests

A tribute to DrupalCon Trivia Night’s from around the world. Visit a special checkpoint, find an Official, and ask them to test your knowledge. If your team can answer correctly, you’ll receive points.

Trivia questions will focus on general knowledge, Nara, Japan, DrupalCons, and of course Drupal itself.

Treasure Hunt Officials

Officials are the DrupalCon Nara organising team and volunteers who are donating their time to make this DrupalCon Nara possible. Because Nara is so big, and our ranks so few, officials will only be at certain checkpoints. Officials will be identifiable from bright yellow DrupalCon Nara t-shirts and we’ll be wearing our conference badges already.

Find us, show us your completed challenges, or ask us for trivia quests, and we will reward you!

Accessibility and fairness

We’ve designed the Treasure Hunt so that everyone can have fun and take part with a chance to win. While some challenges might be harder to get to (such as up hills or trails), many challenges will be easy to reach via public transport.

We will be paying close attention to the Rules (below) and will be making sure that all teams adhere to them and the spirit of fun, fairness, and inclusion. Teams found to be breaking the rules or making for an unpleasant experience may be disqualified.

Rules

Legal

The Treasure Hunt is a special event not normally run at a DrupalCon, and as such comes with its own participation terms. It is important that you read and fully understand these terms. 

  • All participants must agree to the Treasure Hunt Participation Terms and Conditions and the DrupalCon Code of Conduct. You must organise your own travel or medical insurance in order to participate in the event
  • In order to participate in the Treasure Hunt, you and your team members must be registered ticket holders at DrupalCon Nara, or have otherwise been granted an exception by the organisers.
  • No person helping to organise the Treasure Hunt quests can participate in the event as a contestant.

Team Rules

  • Teams must consist of 1-3 members and stay together at all times during the hunt
  • All team members must be present at checkpoints to receive stamps
  • Team names must be appropriate and family-friendly but should be hilarious
  • Splitting up to cover more ground will result in disqualification

Timing is Everything

  • Registration and scorecard collection: From 10:30am at the starting location
  • Competition starts: 11am at the starting location. Challenges are published at this time.
  • Competition ends: 3pm sharp at the designated finish point (location TBA)
  • Late scorecard submissions may not be accepted
  • Lost or damaged scorecards cannot be replaced, so guard yours carefully

Getting Around

  • In order to ensure the event is accessible and fair, teams can only travel under their own power or public transport. This means no taxis, e-scooters, e-bikes, private cars, or helicopters. Wheelchairs (including powered wheelchairs), mobility scooters, and other mobility aids are allowed.
  • Persons with mobility needs can apply beforehand to be granted an exception to this rule.
  • Avoid running, especially in crowded areas and around corners. 

Communicating

  • Officials will send out WhatsApp and LINE group details before the event that can be used to communicate with officials for help, or to report any problems.
  • Make sure your phone is fully charged before the event, as you will need it to look up challenges and check maps. 

Fair Play

  • Complete challenges honestly using only permitted methods
  • Don't share solutions with other teams
  • No tampering with other teams' progress or materials
  • Accept Officials' decisions on scoring and challenge completion
  • Teams caught cheating will be immediately disqualified 

Respect Nara's Sacred Deer

  • Only feed deer official shika senbei (deer crackers) from authorized vendors
  • Never feed deer human food, bread, or snacks - it makes them sick
  • Don't tease, chase, corner, or attempt to ride the deer
  • No flash photography around deer
  • Violating deer protection rules = immediate disqualification

Safety First

  • Obey all traffic laws and use designated crossings
  • Carry a charged phone with emergency contacts
  • Report injuries or emergencies to Officials immediately
  • Respect private property - don't enter restricted areas
  • Keep noise levels appropriate for each location

The Spirit of the Hunt

  • This event is about fun, discovery, and community building
  • Help other teams in emergencies (safety trumps competition)
  • Embrace the adventure, even if things don't go as planned
  • Officials' decisions are final on all matters

 

イントロダクション

最大 3 人のチームで街を駆け巡り、Drupal の知識と日本文化が融合したチャレンジに挑戦。神鹿へのお辞儀から古刹での謎解きまで、この 4 時間のイベントは、コミュニティとつながりながら日本屈指の美しい街を探検できる、まったく新しい体験です。

この宝探しは、カンファレンスの枠を超えた特別な体験です。午前 11 時にスタートするこのイベントを通して、参加者は世界遺産をめぐり、奈良公園の鹿とふれ合い、創造的なチャレンジに挑みます。自撮り投稿や隠されたスポット探し、Drupal のトリビアクイズなど、工夫を凝らしたチャレンジに挑みながら、豪華賞品を目指して競い合います。

参加費は 1 人わずか 30 オーストラリアドル。ガイドブックには載らない奈良の魅力を体感し、仲間と一生の思い出を作りましょう。

遊び方

11 月 16 日（日）午前 11 時の開始と同時に、奈良市内に散りばめられたチャレンジの場所と手がかりの一覧が発表されます。チームごとにルートを考え、できる限り多くのスポットを攻略しましょう。

注意したいのは、取得可能なポイントがチャレンジや場所ごとに異なる点です。中心部でたくさんのスポットを回ってコツコツ点を稼ぐか、それとも郊外の見つけにくい場所で一気に高得点を狙うか。チームは分かれて行動できないため、戦略が勝敗を左右します。

すべての場所とチャレンジを 1 チームで制覇することは不可能だからこそ、選択と判断が試されます。

スコアカード

ポイントを獲得すると、スタッフがチームのスコアカードにスタンプを押します。ゴールは午後 3 時、場所は当日までに発表されます。それまでにスコアカードを提出してください。遅れると失格になるかもしれません！

クエストの種類

クエストには大きく分けて 3 種類あります：チェックポイント、チャレンジ、そしてトリビア。これらは奈良の地元の人々や奈良市、旅行の経験豊かな人達の協力のもと作成されており、街の魅力を存分に楽しめるように工夫されています。

チェックポイントクエストは難易度が低く、得られるポイントも少なめ。チーム全員で現地に到着するだけでクリアです。場所によってはスタッフがその場でスコアカードにスタンプを押してくれますし、別の場所では写真や動画で訪れた証拠を残し、後で他のチェックポイントにいるスタッフに見せる必要がある場合も。

スタート地点から離れたチェックポイントほど高得点がもらえる仕組みになっており、中にはかなり大きな得点が狙える場所もあります。

チャレンジクエストは内容の複雑さによって得点が変わります。たとえば「鹿せんべいをあげてお辞儀をする鹿の動画を撮る」といった簡単な課題もあれば、「博物館を訪れて奈良の歴史に関する難問に答える」といったものも。また、さらに別のチャレンジでは、特定の場所で出されるなぞなぞが、答えを導くヒントになることも。

チャレンジが難しいほど、獲得ポイントも多くなります！

トリビアクエストは世界各地の DrupalCon 恒例「トリビアナイト」へのオマージュ。指定のチェックポイントに行き、スタッフに挑戦状を出してクイズに挑みます。正解できればポイント獲得です。

出題範囲は一般常識から奈良、日本、DrupalCon、そしてもちろん Drupal そのものまで幅広くカバーしています。

スタッフ

スタッフは、DrupalCon Nara の運営チームと、このイベントを実現するために時間を提供してくれているボランティアから成ります。奈良は広い街で、またスタッフの数は限られているため、常駐できるのは特定のチェックポイントのみとなります。

スタッフは明るい黄色の DrupalCon Nara T シャツと、カンファレンスバッジで見分けられます。

スタッフを見つけたら、達成したチャレンジを報告するか、トリビアクエストに挑戦することでポイントを獲得できます！

チームについて

1 チームは最大 3 人まで。単独またはペアで参加することも可能ですが、3 人を超えることはできません。チームはお互いをサポートし合い、イベント中は分かれて行動することはできません。

各チームには少なくとも 1 人、DrupalCon Nara の有効なチケット保持者が必要です。そのメンバーは、カンファレンスチケットを持っていない家族や友人を最大 2 人までチームに招待できます。

ただし、DrupalCon チケットの有無にかかわらず、宝探しは別イベントのため、全員が必ず事前に登録する必要があります。

また、チームごとにユニークなチーム名を考え、メンバーの登録時にお知らせください。

もし参加したいけれど一緒に組む人がいない場合はご安心を。公式 Drupal Slack の #drupalcon_asia チャンネルに投稿すれば、他にチームメイトを探している人が見つかるかもしれません。

登録締切は 2025 年 11 月 7 日、日本時間の 23:59 です。イベント当日に別チームへ移ることはできません。

アクセシビリティと公平性

この宝探しは誰でも気軽に楽しめて、しっかり勝負も狙えるようにデザインされています。一部には丘や小道を登るなどの移動が難しいチャレンジもありますが、多くは公共交通機関を使って簡単にアクセスできる場所です。

運営チームはルール（下記参照）をしっかり確認し、全チームが楽しく、公平かつインクルーシブに参加できるよう努めます。ルール違反や他の参加者の体験を損なう行為が見られた場合、失格となることもあります。

ルール

法的事項

この宝探しは通常の DrupalCon では行われない特別イベントであり、独自の参加規約があります。必ず内容を読み、理解してください。

  • すべての参加者は「Drupalcon Nara 宝探し参加規約」と「DrupalCon 行動規範」に同意する必要があります。また、参加にあたっては日本の国民健康保険、旅行保険や医療保険に各自で加入している必要があります。
  • 宝探しに参加するには、DrupalCon Nara の有効なチケット保持者であること、または主催者から特別に参加を認められている必要があります。
  • クエスト作成など運営に関わった人は、参加者としてイベントに参加することはできません。

チームルール

  • チームは 1〜3 名で構成し、イベント中は常に一緒に行動してください。
  • チェックポイントでスタンプをもらう際は、必ずチーム全員が揃っている必要があります。
  • チーム名は健全で、誰もが楽しめるものにしてください。面白いものは大歓迎です。
  • 分かれて行動した場合は失格となります。

時間に関するルール

  • 受付・スコアカード配布：スタート地点にて午前 10 時 30 分〜
  • コンペ開始：午前 11 時（同じくスタート地点、ここで課題が公開されます）
  • コンペ終了：午後 3 時（指定のゴール地点、場所は後日発表）
  • スコアカードの提出が遅れた場合、受け付けられないことがあります。
  • 紛失や破損したスコアカードは再発行できません。大切に扱ってください。

移動について

公平性とアクセシビリティ確保のため、移動は徒歩または公共交通機関に限られます。タクシー、電動キックボード、電動自転車、自家用車、ヘリコプターは禁止です。車椅子（電動含む）、シニアカーその他の補助具は利用可能です。

移動に特別な配慮が必要な方は、事前申請により例外が認められる場合があります。

曲がり角などの見通しの悪い所や混雑した場所では走らないでください。

コミュニケーション
イベント前に運営スタッフから WhatsApp と LINE のグループ案内をお送りします。質問や問題があればそこで連絡できます。

チャレンジや地図の確認にスマートフォンを使用するため、十分に充電して参加してください。

フェアプレー

  • 課題は正直に、許可された方法のみでクリアしてください。
  • 他チームに答えを共有しないでください。
  • 他チームの進行を妨げたり、資料・証拠等を改ざんするなどの妨害をしてはいけません。
  • 採点や課題達成の判定は運営スタッフの判断に従ってください。
  • 不正が発覚した場合は即時失格となります。

奈良の神鹿を尊重すること

  • 鹿に与えてよいのは認可された売店の「鹿せんべい」のみです。
  • 人間の食べ物やパン、お菓子は絶対に与えないでください。体調を崩します。
    鹿をからかったり、追いかけたり、囲んだり、乗ろうとしたりしないでください。
  • 鹿の近くではフラッシュ撮影禁止です。
  • 鹿の保護規則に違反した場合、即時失格となります。

安全第一

  • 交通ルールを守り、道路の横断時は必ず横断歩道など指定された場所を利用してください。
  • 緊急連絡先を登録した携帯電話を、十分に充電して携帯してください。
  • 怪我や緊急事態の際は直ちに運営スタッフへ報告してください。
  • 私有地や立入禁止区域には入らないでください。
  • 場所ごとにふさわしい音量を心がけてください。

宝探しを楽しむための心得

  • このイベントの目的は、楽しさ・発見・コミュニティづくりです。
  • 緊急時には競争より安全を優先し、他チームを助けてください。
  • 思い通りにいかなくても、その状況を含めて冒険を楽しみましょう。
  • すべての判断は運営スタッフの決定が最終となります。
